When communicating with adults it is usual to communicate in a more formal way, it can be helpful to know their preferred name.It s important to use language that the other adult(s) are likely to understand. The use of jargon or technical language can see threatening and should not be used unless you are certain the terms being used are understood. Information should be clear and concise and the communication given should be brief, and to the point. Formal communication would not normally be used to communicate with children of this age. Children should be able to follow between 1 and 3 pieces of information being given at one time. Some children may find it difficult to use the appropriate language to express their feelings, they may lack the appropriate words, they may be angry or have emotional or special needs. If this occurs the adult dealing with the situation should remain calm, speak quietly and be confident, shouting will make things worse. The child may need some time to calm down and then the adult can reassure them, and talk through the situation that occurred and suggest different strategies to cope if this situation happens again. Adults should actively listen to what a childà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬TMs actually saying and respond appropriat ely to the situation, views and feelings, they should clarify and confirm points to reinforce the understanding. Young people: When communicating with young people, many of the points above (communicating with children) need to be considered. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬TMs important to keep the information clear and at the right level for the young person, too much information may overload, and is likely to switch them off which will reduce the impact of the communication that is being given.
